  • As you’d expect from the name, the African daisy, or osteospermum, is a flower native to Africa. There are about 70 different varieties in the wild, all of them beautiful. In shape, it’s very similar to the little white daisies you’ll find in every British park, but much bigger and much more colourful.

This variety, osteospermum barberiae, has a sunny yellow centre that merges into zingy orange at the edges of its petals. Keep it well watered and well fed and it should flower continuously from summer into early autumn. It can tolerate drought, but if its soil is allowed to dry out entirely it will stop flowering in order to preserve energy.

In very early spring, chop back any wilted growth or any that has been damaged in winter, so it can burst into new life when the weather warms up again. Put it in a pot on your patio or balcony and its flowers will brighten up your day every time you see them. It’s also a massive hit with bees and other pollinators.

    Did you know?

The scientific name osteospermum means ‘bone seed’, rather upsettingly.
